How to Relieve Painful Sex for Cancer Survivors?

Worldwide, breast cancer is the most common invasive cancer in women. The United States has the highest annual incidence in the world, about 125 per 100,000. The lifetime risk is 1 in 8 women (1).

About 90% of women today can survive breast cancer after treatment (2). But, many survivors must endure a significant side effect of antiestrogen therapy. It is vaginal atrophy―with vaginal dryness, painful sex, and sexual dysfunction (3).

Vaginal atrophy is not a disease, but an aging outcome. When women get older, their vaginal tissue becomes atrophic. But, breast cancer treatment can result in an early onset of the aging outcome in younger women. The causes are chemotherapy and the artificial suppression of estrogen (4).

**^{A major side effect of breast cancer treatment is vaginal dryness and painful sex}**

Worse than antiestrogen therapy for breast cancer is pelvic radiation therapy. Women with the following cancers may receive this therapy:

cervical cancer
womb (endometrial) cancer
vaginal cancer
vulval cancer
bladder cancer
rectal cancer
anal cancer
lymphoma in the pelvic area

Antiestrogen therapy shrinks vaginal tissue by nutrient starvation. There are no physical injuries. Many treatment methods can reverse this type of atrophy. These include NeuEve and MonaLisa Touch. But, radiation therapy kills cancer cells by damaging their DNA. Cancer cells with DNA damage stop dividing and die. A problem of radiation therapy is collateral damages to adjacent tissues. It is difficult to repair radiation-induced vaginal atrophy.

To date, NeuEve is the only product that has showed an effect in relieving vaginal atrophy in women with pelvic radiation therapy.

Estrogen supports woman’s reproductive tissues

The female hormone estrogen supports the development of a woman’s reproductive tissues. These tissues include breasts, ovaries, the uterus, and the vagina (5). A healthy reproductive-aged woman has a high level of estrogen. Her vaginal lining is thick and well developed (6).

After menopause, estrogen declines, but not diminished

After a woman reaches menopause, the production of estrogen in the ovaries declines (7). Yet, the estrogen level does not reduce. Adrenal glands and fat cells also produce estrogen (8). As a result, after menopause, a healthy woman can still produce a low level of estrogen. It can still maintain the wellbeing of reproductive tissues and bone health (9). The production of estrogen reduces with aging, but it does not stop even the woman is 80 years old.

Breast cancer treatment

To treat estrogen-sensitive breast cancer, a common treatment is anti-estrogen therapy (10). It includes medications like Tamoxifen, and/or an aromatase inhibitor. The duration is five years.

Tamoxifen works by competing with estrogen for receptors in breast cancer cells. This suppresses cancer growth. Yet, it can block the estrogen effect on normal cells, such as the cells in the vaginal tissue.

Aromatase, also called estrogen synthase, is an enzyme responsible to produce estrogen. It is in tissues that produce estrogen. These include ovaries, adrenal glands, and fat cells.

When women are on Tamoxifen or aromatase inhibitors, estrogen loses effect. As a result, many side effects associated with declining estrogen may appear. These include osteoporosis, joint disorders, and vaginal atrophy.

What are the symptoms of vaginal atrophy?

Vaginal atrophy may cause a range of symptoms. These include vaginal dryness, painful intercourse, itching, and burning. Vaginal atrophy reduces tissue resistance against infections. Recurrent bacterial vaginosis (BV) and chronic urinary tract infections (UTIs) often occur (11).

Vaginal atrophy in healthy women vs. breast cancer survivors

In healthy women, vaginal atrophy may develop after menopause. The cause is the aging-related reduction of estrogen. The estrogen level is only decreased, but not diminished. Even a woman of 80 years old can still produce a low level of estrogen. Both estrogen supplementation and non-estrogen methods can relieve vaginal atrophy. Recovery is often fast and achievable.

In breast cancer survivors, vaginal atrophy is often more severe (12). The cause is artificial estrogen suppression. As a result, women’s internal estrogen is ineffective. Or its production is completely shut off. Estrogen supplementation cannot be used to treat vaginal atrophy. The only options are non-estrogen methods. Recovery is often slow and difficult.

What are complications of vaginal atrophy?

Vaginal atrophy increases your risk of:

Vaginal infections, especially BV. The thinning of the vaginal skin reduces the normal vaginal cell exfoliation. The vaginal acid balance changes to a higher pH. These changes in the vagina make vaginal infections more likely.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs). Reduced estrogen can cause the thinning of the inner skin of the bladder. It also increases the bacterial load in the vagina. It is a reservoir for bacteria to cause chronic UTIs. You might experience increased frequency or urgency of urination or burn with urination. Some women experience more urinary tract infections or urine leakage (incontinence).

Treatment options for painful sex in breast cancer survivors

Estrogen promotes the recurrence of breast cancer. Its supplement is not an option for breast cancer survivors. The only treatment options are non-estrogen methods. These include three categories:

1. Energy-based devices

Several energy-based devices are available in selected OG/GYN clinics. Doctors use these devices to perform intravaginal treatment for “rejuvenation” purposes. They use radiofrequency or laser to generate heat or micro-injuries in deep tissue. Micro injuries can trigger a “wound-healing” effect. New tissues may grow up during the healing process. Would-healing helps regrow the atrophied vaginal tissue.

The brand names of these devices include:

• MonaLisa Touch

• ThermiVa

• FemiLift

• Viveve

• Votiva

Since these devices do not use estrogen, many breast cancer survivors have tried them. While these treatments can provide good relief, there are some problems.

One problem is accessibility. These devices are high-priced heavy-duty equipment that is not available for home use. You cannot buy one and do a self-treatment by yourself. You need to visit an OB/GYN clinic where it is available. Not all clinics in your area have one.

Another problem is the cost. For one set of treatments, it costs about $2,500. Insurance does not cover it (13). Many breast cancer survivors cannot afford it.

The third problem is the short-lived effect. They all claim that one treatment can provide relief of one year (14). This may be for a woman with mild to moderate vaginal atrophy. Yet, many breast cancer survivors have severe vaginal atrophy. They reported that the effect only lasted for 3 months. After 3 months, atrophy returned, and they would need a second set of treatments. Thus, for the effect to last about one year, they may need many treatments. This further jack up the cost.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning letter about these devices due to its health risks and lack of a long-lasting effect.

2. Nutritional supplements

Menopause causes osteoporosis due to the reduction of estrogen (15). Estrogen supplement can reverse osteoporosis, but it has a cancer risk. A safer method to reverse osteoporosis is taking calcium and vitamin D3 and K2 pills (16). This method is nutritional supplements. To date, millions of post-menopausal women are doing that. They have achieved overwhelming success.

Likewise, nutritional supplements can relieve vaginal atrophy. This method includes two categories: topical nourishment and dietary supplement.

2A. Topical nourishment

When estrogen declines, nutrients allocated to the vagina reduce. Nutrient starvation causes it to become atrophied. Thus, delivering either estrogen or nutrients to the vagina can reverse vaginal atrophy.

NeuEve products are for self-treatment of vaginal atrophy. They deliver skin-rejuvenating nutrients, like vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids. The nutrients promote the growth of collagen and elastin fibers in the vaginal tissue (17).

Topical nourishment can enrich these fibers. It makes the thin skin to grow thicker, more elastic, and resilient. The process is like putting cream on the face to smooth wrinkles.

NeuEve has three levels of suppositories and one cream. Cancer survivors can start with NeuEve Silk suppository and vulva balm cream. If you are over 70, read this article.

The method is to insert a suppository in to the vagina once every 4 days. Apply the NeuEve Cream a tiny bit (a dime size) daily on the external vulva. To reverse vaginal atrophy caused by breast cancer treatment takes time. It may take 1-4 months depending on how severe the atrophy is.

2B. Dietary supplement

Topical nourishment can be effective due to direct skin absorption. Yet, if the atrophy is severe, only limited nutrients can reach deep tissues from the skin surface. Combining with dietary supplements can work better. The dietary supplement pills include:

a) One A Day Multivitamin W/Minerals Tablet. The multivitamin with minerals tablet can help prevent deficiency of these nutrients. Some are for women over 50. If you are not taking this pill, we recommend that you do. Even if you are taking it now, we recommend that you take more supplements detailed as follows.

b) Calcium, magnesium, zinc, and vitamins D3+K2. These are the most important supplements that you need to take at this age. Without vitamins D3 and K2, calcium may not absorb well. Additionally, vitamin D correlates to urogenital health in older women. Calcium is essential not only for bones but also for mucus gland secretion. If osteoporosis is not managed, the mucus gland can dry out and the vagina atrophied. The fact that you have severe vaginal dryness and atrophy indicates severe osteoporosis. Please pay special attention to this matter before getting unexpected fractures!!!!!!!!!

c) Fish oil (or flaxseed oil) for omega-3. if you do not like fish, you can take flaxseed oil pills instead. Also, eat a lot of fish if you like to eat fish. Fish provides omega-3 and also collagen proteins that support your skin.

d)Sea buckthorn oil for omega-7. This fatty acid helps you to revive mucus glands and keep moisture in the oral cavity, eyes, and vagina. You can find this supplement on https://www.neueve.com/sea_buckthorn

e) Collagen and/or gelatin. Collagen is a major protein in your body, and gelatin is a degraded form of collagen. Thus, they have identical nutritional values and may both improve your skin health. Due to aging, collagen synthesis reduces. A common sign is the atrophy of skin (wrinkles) and mucosa (like vaginal atrophy). Thus, supplementing collagen/gelatin can help make the atrophied vaginal lining stronger. You can take collagen powder or pills. Or, you can eat collagen in various foods, like Jello, Gummy bear, pork rind, or vegan collagen. For enough supplement, it is important to keep a minimum daily dosage of 2.5-15 grams of collagen/gelatin.

3. Dilation exercise

While you are using NeuEve Silk and Cream, you can do the dilation exercise to speed up the healing process.

Dilation is another self-treatment method for vaginal atrophy (25).

You might have seen handicapped people sitting in a wheelchair with thin legs. Their leg muscles shrink after disusing. If one day they can stand up, they must do walking exercises to grow back their leg muscles. This means that exercise is important and useful.

Stretching the skin promotes its elasticity and durability. It promotes the synthesis of elastin and collagen fibers. Dilation with a set of dilators can help strengthen weak skin. Dilation exercise reduces vaginal atrophy in breast cancer survivors (26). You can find a set of dilators from this link www.neueve.com/dilators.

We recommend magnetic dilators. Magnets in the dilator may help stimulate the atrophied tissue to grow thicker (27).

You can start from a small-sized dilator and do dilations twice a day (morning and evening). Each time 20 minutes. After 1-2 weeks, you may move up a size.

Once you move up to the largest size without pain, your skin will be strong enough. It may endure the stretch caused by sex. Your vaginal atrophy will heal. You may no longer experience the tearing and pain during intercourse.

It is understandable that one may wish to move up the sizes quickly or to try the largest sized dilator first to get a more rapid recovery. However, recovery of vaginal atrophy is a slow process. Moving up the dilator sizes too quickly or skipping sizes can cause overstretching injuries and may be counterproductive. Please do not skip the sizes and try the largest dilator first. Please be patient and do the exercise with a stepwise increment to avoid possible overstretching injuries.

Physically, dilation exercise is like sexual intercourse. The penetration movement can mobilize bacteria normally on the skin into the bladder to cause UTI. You will need to pee immediately after each exercise to prevent UTI. Urination can flush out any bacteria that entered the bladder during the dilation exercise. Therefore, drinking a lot of water before exercise helps build up the urinating flushing pressure and prevent UTI.

In summary, NeuEve Silk, Cream, dietary supplements, and dilation can help cancer survivors find relief. Yet, the recovery of vaginal atrophy may take time. Please be patient to allow these methods to work.

Can women with active cancer use NeuEve?

NeuEve is all-natural, hormone-free, herbs-free, and yam-free. It works by providing essential nutrients to the atrophied vaginal soft tissue. Essential nutrients include vitamins and minerals. Without these in the diet humans cannot survive. The difference is that NeuEve delivers them to the atrophied vaginal tissue. It is like a facial cream for stopping wrinkles on the face (atrophy of the skin). Thus, NeuEve is safe.

Since NeuEve is hormone-free, it does not interfere with breast cancer treatment. But, we do not recommend women with active breast cancer to use NeuEve. I am 64 and have struggled with severe pain and dryness for 10 years.

I did Mona Lisa Touch treatments, used tons of coconut oil and other lubricants. Finally, my husband and I just stopped having sex. Not a good plan.

While going through breast cancer treatments it sent me into peri menopause. I began having hot flashes and very painful sex to the point I could not at all.

When my body went through menopause, I decided I did NOT want to take anything. No estrogen or any other supplements.

My OBGYN did not prepare me for the fact that my body was about to change drastically (tightness, dryness of my private area)

When my husband and I would try to be intimate, it hurt and sometimes he couldn't even penetrate that area because of dryness and tightness.

Talk about putting you into a mind swirling depression!!!

I was literally like "omg, I am just never going to be able to be that close with my husband again????"

Well I was on a mission and thank heavens I came across this site and Vuva site.

I never give reviews for anything….good or bad…but I must on this site. I’m 66 and haven’t had “real” penetration for years. Hope not TMI… but even slight insertion was like a knife. Using lubrication made no difference.

My husband so understanding. Talked with my gyno several times. Tried many things. Just kind of gave up and decided I was done with sex for me. My husband felt so bad for

me. He didn’t press on issue of sex cause he hated hurting me. Not his fault of course.

OMG…..!!!!! Three weeks of suppositories every other day and balm everyday. Bought dilators but haven’t used.

Last night was the test… full penetration with lube, no problem. Slight burn but very tolerable and I know that will go away soon enough.

I would first like to say thank you to Neueve for making such an incredible product. And to anyone reading this review if you are struggling with any issues that prevent you from having a satisfying sexual relationship with your partner please do not hesitate to give these products a chance.

When I first come across this website, I read the reviews and researched the products and I still hesitated. I thought about it for awhile and continued to research other products and brands.

I came back again and eventually I decided to order I can say without any hesitation.

I should have ordered the first time I visited the website The difference is something that I didn’t expect. It’s what I wanted but not what I expected.

After getting help from the experts on the website I ordered the Silk and the Vulva Balm Cream.

I waited approximately 6-7 weeks before I felt comfortable enough to even attempt having sex.

At that point I had not been able to have sex in over 9 years so needless to say I was anxious and also not sure what would be the outcome.

Only product that worked for me

Breast cancer survivor on the cancer pill for the next 10 years… very drying, to complicate things, I had this issue starting even before cancer to the point where sitting was painful.

I’ve tried just about everything, and without hormones because of cancer and I am horrified at what they do to these innocent pregnant mares.

This product (NeuEve Silk) is fabulous…. There are times I forget about using it because it works so well.

I’ve given your information to my oncologist as well as gynecologist and urologist!

Many women silently suffer from painful sex, unfortunately. They should be told about NeuEve.

IT REALLY WORKS, EVEN FOR BLADDER PROLAPSE!!!!

Excellent product! I can't say enough about this.

I was diagnosed 2.5 months ago with Bladder Prolapse. My Gynecologist recommended

Estrogen suppositories for 3 months to strengthen the area inside. He said that without that, surgery would surely fail.

Well, having had Breast Cancer 2.5 years ago, I wasn't too excited about using Estrogen.

I scouted online for a natural alternative and found NeuEve. I saw that people got quicker results doubling up on the monthly box so that's exactly what I did. 2 boxes of Silk per month + the Cream every other night.

I don't have insurance, and this was so much cheaper than Estrogen, not to mention healthier for me.

To my surprise and delight, I can honestly say that I am seeing a 50% - 60% improvement so far. I'm hoping that another 2 months on this product will cure this, and I will no longer require the surgery at all.

I'm very satisfied.
I never write reviews on anything because I'm not a huge internet person in general but felt a strong need to endorse these products.

I was a very fit, healthy person when I was diagnosed with breast cancer 5 yrs ago at the age of 41. I had my ovaries removed which put me into menopause overnight basically.

The vaginal dryness and atrophy started right away and gradually got worse over a few years. Intercourse became basically Impossible due to the pain and discomfort and was causing extreme sadness in my marriage.

I just happened to come across this website while researching for something that could help. I was hesitant to try any of it because I didn't believe it would work.

I tried it for three weeks before my husband and I tried intercourse again and I was amazed at the improvement. Intercourse was pain free and normal again.

I will continue to use these products in the future for my sexual health.

I just wanted to thank Dr. Chang for creating the product. After having cervical cancer, surgery, radiation and chemo, I was unable to have sex for over 2 yrs. A Lifesaver!!

I was using a vaginal estrogen cream after I went through menopause, and it was working fine.

However, I developed breast cancer last year, and am now taking an estrogen blocker. I had no idea the problems this would cause me. It became impossible for me to have intercourse because of extreme (and I mean very extreme!) pain.

Nothing my doctor recommended was helping, and I did not want to go back on the estrogen cream. I found this product doing research online, and decided with hesitancy to give it a try.

I am amazed at how much better I feel! It took 3 months, and now I feel back to normal. I highly recommend this product!

Perfect alternative

I have only been using this product for a few months now. I cannot use hormone treatment because of breast cancer. Very happy with this product and being all-natural. “My urologist told me to get these! I was having constant UTI’s for the past few years, I am 58 and after being diagnosed with breast cancer at 49 and then being told to have my ovaries removed too. I developed vaginal atrophy after chemotherapy for breast cancer. Because of my breast cancer, I am unable to use estrogen suppositories. I had despaired of ever having painless sex with my husband until I tried NeuEve. It works!

I am now able to have sex without pain or using other lubricants. It is nothing short of amazing. For those that complained of some discharge after use, I suggest using a panty liner. It is completely worth it. Insertion is easy with or without an applicator, but I suggest remaining lying down completely still for at least 15 minutes after insertion.

I have found that even pulling on my panties can cause it to slip out. I also find it is best used when I go to bed, so it has all night to work its wonders. I am 66 and have not been able to have painless sex in 15 years. This is a miracle. I plan to move on to the Silver Kit.

I am a young cancer survivor that was forced into menopause early from my cancer treatments. This is the only product that has worked long term for me.

I struggled with BV issues for some time and obviously vaginal atrophy from pelvic radiation, since using this product I have not had one single reoccurrence of BV. I have since recommended this product to a few of my friends all of whom are either pre-or post-menopausal with similar issues (odd odor, less natural lubrication) and they all seem to love it and recommend it.

I would say initially I was skeptical; I have been using this for about 6 months and my honest opinion is that this product is exactly what the packaging states. Please keep in mind I produce no natural hormones and have been in hormone replacement therapy for 5 years, nothing has worked as well as this product. It is safe, effective, and works quickly.

Helped my UTIs

I am a breast cancer survivor with chronic UTIs. I was told that they were caused by vaginal atrophy due to loss of estrogen, but I cannot use any estrogen due to the cancer diagnosis. I tried this product to see if it would help, and to my amazement, it did!

The atrophy was causing inflammation in my urinary tract, and the inflammation was attracting bacteria, generating an infection. I had one almost constantly for 3 years.

Literally the first time I used the product I could see and feel a difference. I have not had a UTI since starting this product. The rest of the benefits of no atrophy are great, but I am so grateful to have found this helpful product for my urinary tract. Hopefully, other sufferers will find the same result.

I have been using the Silk formula for about five months. I had post-menopausal vaginal dryness which was contributing to repeated UTI’s. The dry atmosphere promoted bacterial growth.

In addition, I had extreme vulvar pain (vulvodynia) and every remedy I tried felt as though I was applying acid. I was desperate after three rounds of antibiotics in four months and still had horrible burning pain.

I am a young sixty-year-old woman and breast cancer survivor. My kids call me sixty and sexy, but I was not feeling sexy.

Just returned from a mini-vacation with my boyfriend, had to write!

After over a year of post-menopausal dryness, painful sex, and bleeding after intercourse, I was desperate for a solution. I am uninsured, so I cannot use prescription estrogen because it is too expensive. Nothing I tried over the counter worked well, especially for the pain and bleeding.
